Are you an experienced Senior Software Engineer with a working knowledge of satellite communications principles, then this role could be for you

Our client who has been at the forefront of global mobile satellite communications for over forty years is looking for an experienced Senior Systems Engineer who can support the client’s portfolio of safety services with a primary focus on Maritime services and a secondary focus on Aeronautical services.

Sitting within my client’s Chief Operating Office, the Senior Systems Engineer will ensure that these services are operating correctly at all times, responding to incidents, taking corrective action when needed and proactively managing both the short and long-term operation of these services.

To be considered for the role the successful Senior Systems Engineer will have

  • A working knowledge of satellite communications principles (e.g., link budgets, satellite operational characteristics, etc.)
  • Hands on experience in a satellite- or communications-related field, ideally gained in an operational environment
  • Be familiar with Linux operating systems at command-line level (RHEL would be preferred)
  • Possess of experience of TCP/IP networking (basic troubleshooting and performance monitoring)
  • The ability to prioritise and manage multiple, overlapping tasks
  • Be proactive and be keen to learn new skills and technologies
  • Be able to work effectively unsupervised or in a small team

Any knowledge / familiarity with safety services such Inmarsat-C, MSDS, Classic Aero, SB-S and Linux server applications would be highly desired as would any experience of Linux shell, scripting, Python or Perl, SQL database configuration, administration, and maintenance

You will be expected to Participation in an after-hours on-call support rota and lead third-line response to faults and failures and working to resolve them in a logical, methodical, and efficient manner. Other responsibilities will include

  • Managing all changes and enhancements to safety services systems, ensuring that service availability is not compromised
  • Performing regular health checks and monitoring of all safety services systems and responding proactively to any issues before they affect system integrity
  • Working with equipment manufacturers, software developers and other internal and external stakeholders to define, implement and validate changes and/or enhancements to safety services
  • Writing and maintaining operational documentation (including procedures, “How-To” guides, -#and training materials) relating to safety services systems
  • Keeping up-to-date with technological advances and recommending changes and improvements to safety systems where appropriate
